A few days ago, a woman named Josie Mejia and her whole family decided to go to Punta Negra, a tiny seaside community near their house in Peru. It was there, next to a quite rocky shore overlooking the ocean, that they came to eventually learn an amazing story of love in its finest form.
After Mejia as well as her family settled down on the seashore, a random dog that seemed to be alone approached them.
According to Mejia, the said dog never seemed abandoned. He wore a yellow-green ribbon around his collar, and his fur was neat. Mejia gave him some pets, waiting for his owner. However, a few minutes had passed, and nobody came.
The lonely dog enjoyed Mejia’s pets. But all along, his gaze remained fixed on the ocean. And Mejia soon came to know the very touching reason why.
Mejia and her family thought of adopting the dog themselves, supposing that he had indeed been abandoned. So, when a guy local to the area passed by, Mejia asked him if he had any idea of the dog’s status.
The man explained that everyone in the area practically knows the dog and is fond of him. He told them that the said dog’s owner was a local fisherman who died some time ago and that the dog would come to the beach daily and stare out to sea.
It seems that the dog has been holding vigil – waiting for the return of his best friend who won’t come home.
According to Mejia, they were very much moved.
Mejia believes that the poor dog’s owner died at sea around one year ago and that from then on the dog has definitely been watching out for him every day.
However, though the dog’s beloved owner may not return, the dog is not without friends who would care for him.
The dog’s sentimental story is obviously well-known by many in the community, who give him food and shelter and provide him appropriate health care whenever he needs it.
A local vet in Punta Negra confirmed that the dog’s name is Vaguito and that he is now taken care of by a woman who resides nearby.
At the end of the day, Mejia and her family parted ways with Vaguito, with his sad eyes still cast out to the ocean. However, Vaguito’s bittersweet story – one of loyalty to a pure love that he lost and the love and loyalty that he eventually found in the community – is one that Mejia will never soon forget.
She said that she has a dog at home. She loves dogs in general. Vaguito’s story truly touched her heart.
