We don’t like leaving our pups at home by themselves. But sometimes we don’t have a choice in the matter because dog-friendly establishments are somewhat rare to find. It’s a fairly new concept, but with all the progress we humans are making, we can expect to have more dog-friendly places in the future.
Cafes and restaurants are some of the most challenging places to convert to a dog-friendly status. But this challenge didn’t deter Coppy Holzman and his daughter to start a dog-friendly cafe in New York City. Both of them love dogs, and they like drinking coffee, so they decided to combine the two.
Boris & Horton Cafe opened its doors to the inhabitants of the East Village last year. It became the first dog-friendly cafe in the Big Apple. Being an establishment that serves food and beverages, Coppy and her daughter faced some challenges with the Health Department. So they devised a plan to ensure the safety of their patrons.
First of all, there is a designated area where the dogs can sit with their owners. The food and drinks are received by the customers from a different section of the cafe, and they can bring these to the dog area if they have their pup with them. Most of the dogs that visit the cafe are well-behaved, but to ensure that everyone will have a good time, they set a few house rules for the dogs and their owners.
Allowing patrons to bring their dogs isn’t the only thing that makes this place dog-friendly. Pups can enjoy treats that are freshly made and delivered on the same day. They make doggie drinks that are totally safe for the furballs to consume. They also have a dog shop where dog parents can spoil their fur babies with new toys.
But on top of these, Boris & Horton Cafe is dedicated to saving the rescue dogs of NYC. They are working with several animal groups who bring shelter dogs from time to time. They let the patrons play with the pups, and if they hit it off, they have the option to adopt them legally. This place really is a dog lover’s haven.
