Higgins was a German shepherd. He was put into The Human Society of Preble County as a young puppy and quickly adopted. Unfortunately, his owners didn’t give him the best life, and after about a year, he was brought back to the shelter.
He stayed in that shelter for a long time.
When most people come to a shelter, they’re looking to adopt a puppy, with the ideal being about six months old. Being over a year older, Higgins was at a significant disadvantage. Over and over again, he got passed up.
As months turned into years, it became increasingly unlikely that Higgins would ever get adopted. Those who found out how long he had been here assumed there must be something wrong with him. His face took on a concerned look whenever potential adopters looked at him, and he was continually ignored.
Leslie Renner, the shelter’s executive director, was constantly asked why she didn’t just put him to sleep. But she wasn’t going to give up hope, and neither was Higgens. Together, they held onto the idea that a perfect owner for Higgins would finally come one day.
He finally arrived when Brendon Reed entered on day 2,381 of Higgin’s life in the shelter and declared that he would take Higgins home. He had learned of Higgins’ story, seen his picture, and knew it was the dog for him. He thought Higgins seemed so cute and couldn’t understand why he hadn’t been adopted. The dog’s savior had come at last.
It took six and a half years, but Higgins finally enjoyed the luxuries of a home to call his own. He could watch TV, sleep on the couch, and play in his backyard. And most importantly, he had a dad who loved and cared for him. Higgins found his happy ending at last.
