Dejan Gacic proved how a single person could change hundreds of lives – in this case, the lives of hundreds of dogs.
Gacic runs Vucjak Shelter, a non-profit animal rescue organization in Cumic, Serbia, and he aims to save as many dogs as possible. He draws inspiration from his late mother, Svetlana, the founder of the shelter. In 1997, she wanted to create a safe and secure place for all the unwanted dogs in their area.
Now, Gacic wished to continue his mother’s legacy, so he continued to adopt as many stray dogs as possible.
However, with the numerous dogs in need of help in the area, the number grew more extensive than expected, and his shelter became overcrowded.
He doesn’t have many resources, but he continues to do everything in his power so he may continue his mission.
Gacic would always end up bringing a dog home every day. He sometimes finds them on the streets – old dogs, young puppies, injured, sick, and abused dogs.
Sometimes, people drop them off at his property. It’s not the ideal scenario, but it’s hard to say no to all of them because he knew they have nowhere else to go. And for the homeless strays, there is only one option left for them: euthanasia.
To briefly describe Gacic’s shelter, he has an outdoor space wide enough for the dogs to run and frolic around. There is also a wooden house that shields them from the harsh weather. However, with over 600 dogs under his care, accommodating all of them is a challenge.
The situation becomes a lot more challenging during the winter months, which lasts from November until May. During those nights, Gacic did all he could to keep them as warm as possible.
He would start a fireplace using a stove. But with the temperatures going below zero degrees, the hearth can only do so much. So Gacic sleeps with them to keep all of them warm.
Gacic may not have the best resources or the best facilities for his rescue dogs, but this is undoubtedly much better than leaving them alone on the streets.
He, however, has hopes and dreams for the shelter. First, he wants to build a home that can withstand the winter. The current animal shelter doesn’t even have an entrance, so the dogs end up sleeping on a wet floor when it rains or snows.
Gacic currently looks for ways to boost funds so he could build the perfect home that will protect all of his rescue dogs. We hope that Gacic gets all the help he needs so he can effectively continue the legacy his mother created and so he could give all his dogs the home and protection that they fully deserve.
Imagine the impact one man like Gacic can do. Imagine if all of us worked together for the welfare of our dogs!
