Employees at an offshore oil rig that was 135 miles off the coast of Thailand were shocked to find a dog swimming toward them. A dog was the last thing they expected to see in an area that required six hours of boat travel to reach the nearest land.
They initially believed that their eyes were deceiving them, but a quick check through a pair of binoculars proved them right.
The only possibility was that the dog fell overboard from a fishing trawler. It was inconceivable that the dog could have been washed up that far from shore without drowning. However, even if the dog fell nearby, he was undoubtedly fatigued after battling the waves and making his way to them.
As the dog approached their rig, some workers descended to sea level. One of the courageous men traversed the metal scaffolding to approach the exhausted dog. He extended a pole so that the dog could grasp it. However, the dog was unable to maintain a strong grip on the slippery pole.
He appeared extremely dejected but was determined to survive. It appeared from the way he was staring at the people that he was pleading with them not to abandon him. Fortunately, the men devised a strategy and were able to reach out and tie a rope around the dog. They then cautiously pulled him toward the rig.
The workers on the oil rig took the dog to the surface and cleaned him up. They also gave him food and drink. Before returning him to the mainland, he was given the name Boonrod. It means “the one saved”.
Boonrod was turned over to Watchdog Thailand, an animal rescue organization. They will care for him until he has fully recovered from his terrifying experience. If the dog’s owners don’t show up, one of the workers who rescued him has expressed interest in adopting the lovable animal.
