Mackenzie is living evidence that brilliance exists in many shapes and sizes. The American Humane Organization proclaimed the little Chihuahua to be the Hero Dog of 2020. She continues the heritage of other hero dogs who, despite growing up as strays, have had a significant impact on the world.
Kenz, as she is affectionately known, nearly perished as a puppy. Her congenital cleft palate made eating and drinking independently extremely difficult. She was tube-fed until she was one year old, then she underwent corrective surgery.
She was fortunate to have the Mia Foundation, a group that helps animals with birth defects, care for and fight for her until she recovered her strength to do it on her own. Since then, the courageous fighter has conquered her health issues and developed into a modest and affable puppy. She has also begun to pay it forward through her work at the charity by caring for all types of rescue animals, especially those born with congenital defects similar to her own.
Kenz is exceptional because she cares for all animals she encounters with the same devotion, regardless of their species. She has raised birds, cats, goats, dogs, and squirrels, among other animals. Herman the pigeon, Aerie the goat, and Charlie the turkey were among the most memorable baby animals she assisted. Like a true mother, Kenz feeds, cleans, trains, hugs, and unconditionally adores her babies.
The small hero won the category for shelter dogs and ultimately defeated all 407 contestants to become the overall victor. The fact that the award-giving body was also commemorating its 10th anniversary made her achievement all the more remarkable. Kenz is deserving of the award not only due to her unusual life experiences, but also for demonstrating that anyone can be a hero.
Kenz epitomizes the concept of heroism as she strives to encourage others to be nice and accepting of everyone, regardless of their appearance. She has been frequently visiting schools to encourage youngsters to be patient and nice to animals, regardless of their size or appearance.
