Devin Diede and his wife, Alex, thought it was a typical Friday as they hiked on Centennial Trail, a Black Hills National Forest route. But right before they stepped onto the trail by Sheridan Lake, they came upon a rattlesnake.
Bear saving his hiker owners
Neither noticed it, but Bear, the 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, did. To save Devin and Alex, Bear fought the rattlesnake by himself. If Bear had not attacked the snake, Alex would have stepped on it and bit her. This canine saved their lives.
They were unsure if Bear got hurt; the rattlesnake did not create any noise when it attacked Bear. Devin added that Bear didn’t give yip or bark after the incident. There were no puncture wounds on his skin when they checked. But the moment they laid Bear down on the ground, they noticed he wouldn’t put weight on his front leg, so it was time to rush Bear to the vet.
The rush to save Bear
Their car was two miles away from where they were. So Alex ran as fast as she could with Bear in her arms. Bear could no longer walk after about a two-hour drive to get medical help, leaving Alex and Devin more worried.
Fortunately, the medical staff from the emergency animal clinic quickly handled the situation. The vet tested Bear’s condition; they discovered that he had a bite on his chest near his shoulder, and they immediately started a blood transfusion.
It was such a heartbreaking moment for the couple when they had to leave Bear at the vet overnight, especially since they had no idea if Bear would ever make it.
The following day, the couple received a call from the vet and were delighted. Bear’s blood work was incredible, and he’s feeling better, so they can check him out from the clinic.
Devin proudly declared that Bear was doing terrific and enthusiastically walking around. They are very thankful for Bear; definitely, he is a little hero.
