Many farm owners rely heavily on dogs to protect their livestock from predators. John Wierwille, a farm owner from Georgia, Atlanta, has delegated this important assignment to his Great Pyrenees named Casper. And it’s probably one of the best decisions that he’s ever made.
A pack of coyotes threatened the safety of Wierwille’s farm animals. Thankfully, Casper did his best to fend off the predators.
The brave Great Pyrenees
A group of 11 coyotes arrived at Wierwille’s farm, and it appeared that they were planning to harm the sheep. But the 21-month-old Great Pyrenees blocked the predators’ access to the farm animals.
According to Wierwille, Casper jumped over the fence and charged at the coyotes. He bit their heads and even threw their bodies around. During the fight, the farm’s five other Great Pyreneeses herded the sheep to keep them from being involved in the chaos.
Wierwille was unsure if the coyotes attacked Casper first. He explained that Casper probably became aggressive because he felt that Daisy, his partner that was pregnant with eight puppies, was threatened. After the encounter, Casper went missing for two days. But he reemerged from a chicken coop with severe injuries, such as large tears and cuts.
Casper has recovered
Casper’s tail injury was so severe that it had to be amputated. According to reports, the dog’s medical bill was over $15,000. Thankfully, Wierwille was able to settle this with the help of animal lovers who organized a fundraiser. The excess funds were donated to the animal hospital that took care of Casper.
When Wierwille bought Casper home for the first time, the dog quickly doted on the farm animals. He even rested his head on the tiniest sheep. This only goes to show that Great Pyreneeses are gentle and loving dogs. But once their family is threatened, they will surely put up a fight.
